The WES meeting has traditionally been held during the London Pen Show weekend. It has always been an informative and friendly get together and gives us an opportunity to meet up with some of our overseas members.
The history of writing is a major theme of the British Museum which makes it a particularly appropiate venue for a W.E.S. event. This time our meeting is centred on a talk about the Vindolanda tablets to be given by the British Museum's Katharine Hoare.

During her talk Katharine will offer an insight into the famous Roman Vindolanda tablets and what they reveal about the process of written documentation in Roman Britain and the lives of their writers.

In a special edition of BBC2's Meet the Ancestors programme broadcast in 2003 a panel of experts voted the Vindolanda tablets their favourite treasure at the museum.

These 'tablets', found near Hadrian's Wall in 1975, are not made of clay or stone, but of wood and written on with pen and ink. The Roman's used some remarkably looking modern pens including ones made of bronze with split nibs as well as ones made from quills and a variety of other materials.

We will meet at the museum at 1:45pm with the talk beginning promptly at 2.00pm. The talk will be held in the gallery where the tablets are on display (WARNING: This will mean that we are standing for the duration of the talk - about 45 minutes plus question time). After the talk members will be free to explore other examples of writing and writing equipment in the museum with the aid of a set of specially prepared notes.
